Refreshed on Tue., 28-Dec-2010 10am — green background for latest updates
I had a few bookmarks on my home computer and decided to place them in a table for easy access away from home. Here's the result.
eBird.org is a database of sightings submitted by subscribers. All sightings can be accessed via the Bar Charts & First Sightings at the county level or higher. One limitation is its inability to display all sightings at lower levels. Only shared "hot spots" are available below the county level.
eBird.org is a free service. To sign up you can register here.
As an example: if you wish to see when & where PROTHONOTARY WARBLER has been seen in New York State go to the "N.Y. State" row in the table below & click on either the current year or overall species # under "Bar Charts". After the page loads you'll see all species for the location and time chosen. Find PROTHONOTARY WARBLER & click on the species name to view a map of reported sightings. To zoom in click on the plus sign on the left side of the map. Draw a box around the area you're interested in. Choose "Map", "Satellite" or "Hybrid" to get the most detailed views.
You can change the time of year by clicking on "Change Date". Here's a map of PROTHONOTARY WARBLER sightings during the breeding season in New York State. The earliest report in the database appears to be 1961.
Here are some of the features of the table:
In the titles the following texts have hypertext links:
- eBird.org links to the eBird.org home page
- The following links go to their respective pages on eBird.org
- View and Explore Data
- Bar Charts
- First Arrivals
- Top 100
- Under the reports (Bar, 1st Arrivals & Top 100) the species # brings you to that report. The 1st Arrivals are sorted by date in descending order showing the newest birds first.
If the location name has a green background there is a recent update to the species on the current year list & possibly the overall list. An up-arrow appears next to the species # showing what has increased since the table was last published.
Under "Locations" the displayed date shows when the last new species was reported for the current year. The location name is clickable when a note exists detailing when a new species was added to either the current year or the overall (1900-current) lists. Clicking the location name brings you to the bottom of the table where the notes are kept. Using the back arrow in the browser is the easiest way to get back to the table. Notes are kept from previous updates with the most recent appearing at the top for each location.
In the notes, each species name links to a map showing all locations where the bird was seen for the current year for the 8 counties surrounding the New York City area including Suffolk, Nassau & Westchester Counties. If the bird is an addition to the N.Y.S. list outside the 8 counties a New York State map will display.
There's a bit of analysis below the main table showing the % of birds seen in 2010 vs. the overall # and also the # of days a new species was last reported. The top 3 for each will be highlighted.
The focus is on the N.Y.C. Area.
